Planning to visit the Maldives? Here are when we think are the best times to make that trip according to our local friends!

Background

Located in the heart of the Indian Ocean near the equator, the Maldives generally experiences sunny tropical weather all year round, averaging around 29º Celcius. Due to its uniquely exclusive locale in the middle of a gigantic ocean, daily weather can be sporadic. It could be warm and sunny one moment, and in the next hour, you’ll get showers for just 30 minutes.

This is a great thing! Such rapid changes in weather gives rise to many opportunities to experience and see different things. The wildlife in the ocean react just as rapidly to these changes in weather, and you’ll be in for a treat every time!

Being a tropical country, there is generally no bad time to visit the Maldives. All that the Maldives has to offer can in fact be experienced all year-round. This guide simply helps point you to the minor differences one can expect during different times of the year.

Best Times to Visit (Weather)

Weather-wise, the best times to visit the Maldives is during the Maldivian winter months of December to April. During this period, the Maldives is blessed with the longest sunny days, so you’ll have many more hours to spend basking under the warmth of the sun. With less rain, weather is less humid too, which lends the Maldives cool, dry breezes that tantalise.

This naturally also means that the seas are calmer and clearer, which is excellent for diving, snorkelling and other water activities.

If You’re A Diver

The Maldives is perhaps the best place in the world for diving. Warm, comfortable waters and having the entire Indian Ocean in its back yard treat divers to some of the most marvellous sights and diverse wildlife anywhere.

The best time to dive is in April. This is the time of transition for Maldivian weather, when the dryness of the months past invite rejuvenating rains of the coming monsoon.

As it is the tail end of the Maldivian winter season, the seas are calm and visibility is fantastic. Yet, the changing weather brings about more activity under the seas as wildlife too adapt to the changing weather. This means that April offers the best chances for breathtaking encounters with the magnificent Manta Rays and the majestic Whale Shark. Swimming with a pod of wild dolphins is even a possibility during this period.

For More Intimacy and Privacy

While resorts in the Maldives never experience overcrowding, the “good weather” period is when these resorts tend to be busier than usual. If complete exclusivity is what you’re after, then we think these periods would offer you the perfect escape:

The wet monsoon months of May to November are your best bet if you want entire beaches all to yourself. If you love lounging with your loved one, watching raindrops trickle down the windows of your ocean-perched villa, then this period is perfect for you.

Don’t get us wrong, despite more rainfall during this period, that’s not all you’ll ever experience. Since the showers don’t last more than a few hours, there’s still plenty of sun so you can still snorkel and dive as you wish!

Personally, we prefer visiting during this period because we’ll be blessed with warm sunny weather alongside refreshing showers each day.
